Pose, Pause, Pounce and Bounce. (PPPB) Questioning techniques.

Pose, pause, pounce, and bounce. (PPPB)

Taking the time for the question to grow and for students to do the evaluation for you.

  • Alternative from IRE.
  • Ire is teacher controlled. The teacher poses the question, INITIATES, the student RESPONDS, and then the teacher EVALUATES and so the process goes on and on.
  • The teacher does all the work.
  • Dylan Williams, education guru. http://youtu.be/ioeI-zZPx9g
  • Pose, Pause, Pounce and bounce.
  • POSE the question,
  • Wait three seconds
  • One two three four got to wait a little more. 3 seconds, waiting.
  • Average wait time in a question is less one second for a teacher.
  • POUNCE on a student, what is your answer?
  • BOUNCE onto an another student, what do you think to that answer?

This can lead into deeper and more meaningful classroom discussions, if allowed to are ways to take the questioning further. Does anyone disagree? Why don't you agree? Who agrees and why?

SO WHY USE IT?

It allows the class to flow, with a good pace. It allows students thinking time and it keeps students on their toes that they have to be engaged and thinking about the question. It allows deeper and more meaningful answers that require deeper levels of thinking. It allows you as the teacher not only to get the HOW, but also the WHY?

Another good tip.

Don't accept student A or student B shouting out the answer to maintain pace or behaviour. Don't allow student C to answer the question because (you know they won't let you down and) they will help you move on during an observation lesson!
